Mosquito Identification

What are mosquitoes?

A mosquito is a fly-like insect that has a narrow, oval-shaped body, long legs that hang down when in flight, and a long thin nose (proboscis) used for feeding. Mosquitoes have one pair of wings covered in fine hairs, and most are black, dark brown, or black and white. Females mosquitoes consume blood meals from warm-blooded animals to get the protein required to create viable eggs, and only the female bites. Males feed on plant nectar, which is the primary food source for both male and female mosquitoes.

Are mosquitoes dangerous?

Mosquitoes feed on a wide variety of hosts, giving them the ability to pick up and transmit a wide range of disease-causing pathogens. They are one of the world’s most dangerous insects because of the number of people affected by the life-threatening diseases they spread. Mosquitoes are also responsible for spreading parasitic heartworm to our pets, which can cause death if not treated by a veterinarian.

Why do I have a mosquito problem?

Mosquitoes will invade any property that offers them resting spots, breeding sites (standing water), and food sources (flowering plants and trees). Properties with or near areas of standing water attract mosquitoes because the females lay their eggs on standing water. Anything from a large pond to water pooling on a tarp can act as a breeding site for mosquitoes. These small insects are prolific breeders, and their populations are at their highest when the weather is hot and humid.

Where will I find mosquitoes?

Mosquitoes live and breed outdoors, although they will find their way inside while searching for blood meals through open windows and doors. Mosquitoes are most active at dusk and dawn when the weather is coolest. During the heat of the day, mosquitoes hide out in tall grasses, behind tree bark, along fence lines, and in dense vegetation. Places where mosquitoes tend to be most problematic include:

  • Yards

  • Parks

  • Grassy fields

  • Athletic fields

  • Lakes

  • Wooded areas
