Why Termites Find Your Washington D.C. Home So Appealing & What You Can Do About It

4/10/2020

There are many different pests that can become a problem in your Washington D.C. home, and some of them are more of a concern than others. Nuisance pests are annoying, and you don’t want to keep them around. However, there are small but dangerous pests that pose significant risks to your property or your health. The termite is notorious for damaging your home and your property. This expensive and unwanted pest is difficult to identify and often costs homeowners thousands of dollars in damage before an infestation is even noticed.

One common kind of subterranean termite found in the D.C. area is the Eastern subterranean termite. This pest can cause a lot of damage to your home or any other kind of building. While they aren’t always the most conspicuous pest, knowing what they look like is useful in helping identify an infestation.

Like other species of termite, the Eastern subterranean termite lives in a caste system with each member contributing to the overall success of the colony. You likely won't see worker or soldier termites, but you may see reproductives or alates when they swarm.

  • Worker termites are about 1/8 inch long and are creamy white in color.  They have a long narrow shape.

  • Soldier termites are slightly larger than workers but look similar with one exception: They have pincers that they use to ward off enemies and protect the colony.

  • Reproductives or alates are the only termites that leave the colony. Once a colony is well established, these termites will swarm to mate and find a new location to establish a sister colony. If you see reproductives or their shed wings, you likely have a well-established termite infestation and should contact a professional immediately.

These termites, along with other species of termite, can do damage to floors, walls, the internal structures of your home, and more.

What Attracts Termites to Your Home?

No one wants to find termites in their home especially given that these pests can cause significant structural and financial damage. Learning why termites are attracted to a  home is one of the best ways to go about preventing a termite infestation.

There are a few reasons why Eastern subterranean termites find your home an appealing place to live:

  • These pests are attracted to water accumulation and moisture, especially near your home’s foundation.

  • Because they are attracted to water, they also are more likely to infest homes with excess humidity, leaky pipes, and water damaged wood.

Other than water, their main draw to enter a home is wood. If you have firewood or wooden structures close to the exterior of your home, this can make it easier for termites to make their way inside.

How To Prevent Termites

Prevention methods can go a long way in keeping Eastern subterranean termites out of your Washington D.C. house. While no prevention method is foolproof, you can reduce your risk and make your home less attractive to termites by taking the following precautions:

  • Store firewood at least 20 feet from the exterior of your home.

  • Reduce moisture inside your house by having property ventilated crawl spaces, attics, and basements.

  • Further reduce moisture problems by fixing leaky pipes and faucets.

  • Protect the foundation of your home by creating a barrier between the foundation and the soil.

  • Remove mulch and dead trees from your property.
